The one advice that I can give before mentioning any methods
to optimize your website for better rankings is, that your content is your
king, in the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). But you will probably
see that there are some websites that get on the top of search engine rankings
due to some high-powered link building strategies. But for visitor loyalty and
traffic retention you will always need good optimized content.
Now I will tell you some of the steps to optimize your
website for better Search Engine rankings.
Step 1.
Dedicate time for quality work.
Remember one thing that you are writing for the people and
not for the search engines. You content is meant for the people to read and interact
with. Search engines only list your work but it’s the visitors who share your
work exponentially if they like it. There are some important tips I can give
you which you need to keep in mind when you are writing articles.
- When you write content for your website you need to write in in way that people would want to share that content in different social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others. These social signals are read by search engines and it signifies the quality of your domain. Generally the more the followers you have, in these social network websites, the better.
- Don’t forget to submit your content to different content aggregators like Delicious, Digg, Reddit etc, and these sites will provide you with more readers.
- If your website is really old and you have some old content which you think are not SEO ready or not updated with the latest SEO best practises then revisit them and make relevant changes to them. Sometimes republishing also helps.
Step 2
Fill all image attributes.
Websites generally contain a lot of images and it’s also essential
for a good presentation for any article. But there are certain things about
images that need to properly complete so as to enable a search engine list them
accordingly.
Remember:
Search engine spiders don't read images but they do read
their textual descriptions in the tag, so if you have images on
your page, then it is wise to fill in the tag with some keywords
about them.
Step 3
Linking to trusted websites
Many web masters make the mistake of exchanging links with
other website. Although they will not violate Google’s TOS, but they will work
against you. So what’s the solution you might ask? The solution is to find
trusted websites and as them to link back to your site, and in return offer
them content that you will write for a particular website. Google checks to see
if the link in a website have an editorial right to be there or not.
Step 4
Count the words in your article.
Some surveys suggest that generally readers on-line do not
read the entire content published in any website. But that shouldn't deter you
from writing more content rich articles. Remember the more you write the better
chance are to include related terms for the targeted keywords. SEOs know this for a fact. Some SEOs prefer
250 word length articles but I think that’s just too short. I generally write
750 word articles, which allows me to put more information about the particular
topic as well as include the SEO related terms that I want to use.
Step 5
Your content should be Unique.
Unique content is the key to success. You might choose to
write small articles and less frequently but if it is unique consider yourself
to be a winner. Duplicate content can negatively impact your website and also
result in being removed from the search engines. There are different websites that
help to track duplicate content. I prefer CopyScape and Siteliner.
Step 6
Redirects (301 and 302) should be set properly.
Redirects are very vital settings and when they are not
applied properly, redirects can cause a lot of pain – sometimes it results in
the target page not opening, or even worse – a redirect can be regarded as a
black hat technique by the search engine, when the visitor is immediately taken
to a different page. So make sure they are applied properly.
Step 7
metatag should be present and properly
set.
Although metatags are somewhat becoming less important but there
are metatags that still matter. These are the and
ones. The metatag should be used to write
the description of your site. Make sure the description is as relevant to the
site as possible. In Bing and Yahoo! Metatags are still rocking. The
metatag has one more advantage – it sometimes pops in the
description of your site in search results.
Try to keep the metatag within 200 chars
limit.
Step 8
Search proper keywords for the metatag
The metatag also matters. Keeping the
metatag at a reasonable length – 10 to 20 keywords at most is advised. Stuffing
the tag with keywords which are not present on your website or
blog is bad for your rankings.
Step 9
Make sure you website or blog has a proper navigation
Having a proper navigation means that the pages will be
indexed properly in the search engines. Also having a good navigation will help
your readers to find all the content in your website more easily.
Step 10
Having a proper site map is also essential.
Site maps are very crucial items of your website. Generally having
two sitemaps is advised, one static version and another an XML version. There
are many different websites where you can generate a sitemap from quite easily.
You can use this website for generating sitemaps easily: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
This step concludes the tips that you can apply as per your
needs for optimizing your website in order to get a better search engine
ranking. There are several other ways to improve and optimize a website or a
blog. More such tips will be provided in another article.
